Benavidez Responds to Bisping’s Criticism of “Little Flyweights”

Five fighters convened in Toronto yesterday in preparation for UFC 152 which will take place Sept. 22 at the Air Canada Centre in Canada’s largest city. The card is headlined by the UFC’s inaugural flyweight championship fight between Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. Michael Bisping, who is fighting Brian Stann in the co-main event called out the UFC saying “no one cares about the little flyweights” who are the lightest division in the UFC at 125-lbs. Bisping sat next to Benavidez at the pre-fight press conference and the two pulled no punches.

Benavidez commented on Bisping’s remarks, commenting:

“It was pretty silly of course when I heard it, but it’s Michael Bisping. Everyone pretty much expects something ridiculous to come out of his mouth, right? I mean, that’s pretty much what he does.”

Bisping quickly responded:

“Listen pal, when you were a glint in your dad’s eye, I was kicking ass in the UFC.”

Benavidez was the last to throw in a friendly barb, adding:

“And probably saying ridiculous things, also, it’s not gonna change the fact that [Demetrious Johnson and I are] the top two guys in the world and that we’re going out to make history that night. So everyone that supports us, thanks and we love you. Everyone that doesn’t, including Bisping, I think you soon will and you’ll be excited for this. So yeah man, it’s gonna be great, and [pats Bisping on the shoulder] glad to have you on the card as co-main, buddy.”

Missing from the press conference was BJ Penn. His opponent Rory MacDonald has been questioning Penn’s dedication and used his absence as more fuel for the fire answering reporters. The two have agreed, though, for voluntary VADA testing and will be the first two fighters to do so for a UFC fight.
